Jer 17:7-8
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
whose trust is the Lord.
He is like a tree planted by water,
that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
Days can be full of trials.
With all the things we need to do, work, family responsibilities, finances, ministries and now the covid situation We can get tired & worn out.
We are in a war and we have an enemy who wants to destroy us. We live in a world that is constantly trying to take our focus off the Lord.
Jesus told a parable about the wise man who built his house upon a rock.
If we trust in the Lord and build a foundation of our life on Christ, we will be strong when trouble comes. Like the tree planted by the water,
Our roots will be strong, and deep enough to draw water through the drought. We will bear fruit, stay alive and not die from the heat no matter what is happening in our lives.
Our spiritual health is our responsibility.
We have a part to play, to minister to ourselves, and to receive strength from the Lord.
1 Samuel 30:6
David was greatly distressed, …. And it goes on to say.. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
So how can we strengthen ourselves in the Lord our God?
We strengthen ourselves in the Lord by living a lifestyle of intimacy & encounter with Jesus. It is this communion, this being one with God is life.
This is not some religious ritual we do repeatedly for the sake of following rules. We do these things because they help us develop a strong love relationship with Him that will last. We do this because we are in love with Him. In the same way, a family bonding on a regular basis keeps the relationship strong long term, so consistency In our bonding time with the Lord leads to sustained love, intimacy & strength.
The deeper we go with the Lord, the more we come to realize that it is His love, and love for each other, (and the Work He gives us on this earth) in the end, is all that matters.
Consistency is important……
Simon Sinek, a British-American Author
Said if you brush your teeth really well once, won’t see a difference. But brushing 2 minutes, twice every day, every day, your teeth will be healthy and last a lifetime.
Author John C. Maxwell says it this way.
Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.
It is the same with our relationship with God. So we see by forming routines of setting time aside to be with the Lord, every day, our relationship will grow stronger, and our strength will be sustained. Our roots will strong and deep into the river of His life-giving water. Over time these routines become part of daily life, and the most sacred times of our lives because these are times we feel closest to our beloved. So how can we live a lifestyle of encounter? What Things can I put into place and do on a regular basis that will help keep me spiritually alive.
God is our source of life. In meeting with him, We are also nourished by Him.
There are countless ways to meet with God. These are just a few.
The Word of God
Matt 4:4 ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
God’s Word gives us LIFE. We Become Alive and sustain that life by receiving the Word of God which is recorded in the bible, regularly.
Praise and worship
“God Inhabits the Praises of His People” – Psalm 22:3
Having a song of praise in your heart throughout the day. I often hear Charity (one of our staff) singing praise songs while she works.
That’s her way of connecting with the Lord throughout the day.
Personal Prayer time.
When I was young, a pastor gave me the most valuable advice: He said, “Go to a quiet place and spend time just loving Jesus.”
Setting time aside every day to spend with the Lord, in His presence, our personal prayer time is central to our relationship with Him.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit
John 7:37 Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”39 By this he meant the Spirit.
Regular confession of sin & repentance
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Soaking Isa 40:3
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Meeting with other believers. Be part of a church family.
Prov 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Take Communion, Regularly.
John 6:35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
Communion is so important that Jesus even said that unless you eat Hid body and drink His blood you have no life in you
Generosity & Serving others.
A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” —Proverbs 11:25
Gratitude helps us to be happy & content with what we have and not go after the lust of the flesh
Receive the power to avoid sin.
Sin ruins lives. Sin ruins our relationship with God and pollutes and defiles us.
When we strengthen ourselves in the Lord, we receive power from The Holy Spirit to overcome sin.
The more we experience the love of God, the less the things of this world will be appealing.
James 4:7. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Watch what you watch. Be careful of the information & media you expose yourself to. James 1:27 ……keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
Find a pastor, Christian friend, or mentor with who you can be fully honest.
James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
Find what works for you.
And different things work for different people. Find what works for you. For example, I’m not much of a book reader but I love audiobooks. When my head hits the pillow and I’m trying to sleep at night, I’m in prayer.
